The Irish Times National Debating Championship is a long-standing competition for students in higher education across Ireland. For the 2023 final, the programme needed to reflect both the significance of the event and the theme of the debate motion, which focused on democracy within the European Union. The challenge was to design a printed programme that balanced editorial clarity with a strong visual identity, while capturing both the historical weight of the event and its contemporary relevance.
Outcome
I designed a four-page printed programme inspired by the debate motion and the EU50 milestone. The visual direction drew from 1940s newspaper design to reflect the heritage of The Irish Times, combined with a modern sans-serif typeface to introduce a contemporary feel. The final design created a clear and engaging editorial layout, connecting the historical context of the publication with the subject matter of the debate.
