Challenge
In response to the ISTD brief “Putting Things in Order”, this project explored Hoarding Disorder from the perspective of those experiencing it. Hoarding is often seen as chaos, but for those living with it, it represents a sense of control over emotions. The challenge was to create a publication that shifted the focus from what people hoard to why they hoard, encouraging empathy while capturing the tension between external disorder and internal structure.
Outcome
I designed a newspaper-style publication inspired by commonly hoarded materials, using typography and layout to express moments of both order and chaos. Case studies were embedded throughout, ranging from severe to hopeful, to illustrate the spectrum of behaviours and provide a human context. Structured layouts were intentionally disrupted to reflect the emotional experience of hoarding, contrasting with moments of control. The final outcome creates an empathetic and immersive reading experience, helping the audience understand hoarding not just as disorder, but as a deeply personal way of coping and organising emotion.
